Reconstruction of Berlin Gate

1. A SHORT BRIEF OF THE HISTORY OF THE OLD TOWN

The Old Town with its castle, town hall, parish church and market place had a unique charm. In a consequence of the war, the Old Town has died out for nearly 50 years.
Together with the remains of the 16th century fortress has become a great attraction for tourists.
The fortress had been a masterpiece of the fortification art. Till today the fortified walls, the Berliner Gate, Chyzyno Gate, two ravellins, three outposts (bastions), inner moats
as well as the ruins of the buildings including the castle, may be found there.
There is also a well-preserved network of streets and the foundations of the buildings.

2. JUSTIFICATION OF THE PROJECT

Fortress Kostrzyn nad Odra and especially Berlin Gate has very specific location because it is situated directly by Polish-German border (around 100m from Berlin Gate is situated road border crossing, which was opened in 1994).
Furthermore it is worth to be emphasized that from historical communication system one can conclude that Berlin Gate was the main entrance to the Fortress.
There was also a lack of Tourist Information Point, but nowadays there is one located in Berlin Gate, which offers the whole information about the Old Town and results of Baltic
Fort Route project and project partners – fortresses with whom we were making this project.
Currently the Old Town is a place where you can go for a walk and meet with a history of our city. It is possible thank’s to cooperation with our partners, who also believes in a potential of our city and support out ideas.

3. PRESENTATION OF ACTIVITIES

1. Cleaning walls from lichens, efflorescence, paints remnants, etc., therein: eradication of mosses,
2. Realization of anti-moisture protection. Anti-moisture protection of outside walls,
3. Demolition of improperly made complements of the wall tissue inside the rooms and in elevation. Repair of the wall – complement,
4. Restoration of destroyed brick and stony elements,
5. Realization of the new floorings and walls inside the rooms,
6. Realization of inner plasters,
7. Rigging of window and door carpentering,
8. Realization of clearances surface with granite cobble ,
9. Reparation and protection of elevation therein:

- Extraction of bushes which grow on the gate crown
- Exchange and complement of broken – down elevation parts:
* Arcaded frieze
* Mould
* Rosettes
* Window gaps jambs, arched lintels, window sills and sandstone plinth

10. Realization of inner electrical and water – sewage systems,
11. Realization of band drainage.
