Vegetation and Building Stock of the Citadel Spandau
The Citadel Spandau was built between 1560 and 1594. The works started during the reign of Brandenburg's elector Joachim II.
Apart from its military function of securing the roads and waterways, the Citadel had to serve as a safe house for the nearby court as wall.
The Citadel was taken over by the Soviet Army in May 1945 without a shot being fired, the stationed British forces subsequently protected the structure and maintained it as a historic monument.
The monument was secured and renovated repeatedly in the following decades. The federal funds were made available for essential repairs and safeguarding work in the 80s under the Future-investment-program.
The Spandau Citadel was reconstructed and renovated step by step over the last decades.
The country and the City of Berlin invested into the maintenance and the protection of the historical heritage and in attractive tourist offers.
In the Spandau Citadel research was carried out on the interaction of nature and monument in the conflict with nature conservation policies.
